What does "VOLUME NON CONSULTABLE" mean exactly?
Hi! I am new to this community. I have a question about some Italian civil records. Some of the images include only the front page of a volume, and there is what looks like a sticky note saying "VOLUME NON CONSULTABILE". Here is an example:
Does this mean that the volume is in so bad condition, the contents weren't imaged? Or could there be some other reason that these volumes were not recorded?
I would post this to the Italian group, but my Italian is very poor.

The Italian records imaged by FamilySearch are usually the state archive copies. Two copies were made of every birth, death and marriage record - one kept at the comune and the other sent first to the regional court (tribunale) and then later to the state archives for safekeeping. Unfortunately, storage conditions were not always ideal and records were subject to water damage, insect damage, disintegration, fire, earthquake or generally lost or accidentally disposed of (or even destroyed by Allied bombing in WWII in some cases).
So if records for given years are not imaged that usually means that either they were lost or damaged beyond recognition. In those cases you would need to contact the comune in question directly to research their original copies of the records, which of course are not filmed and only in paper form.

For the first 14 volumes, we see Italian for "volume not consultable". It's not until image 48 that the film is useful. I don't know why the contents were not imaged.
@Heather R Jacobs Heather, perhaps you can find out something or tag someone who might know.

The books were in such poor condition they could not be filmed.
