Learning about the world our ancestors lived in
Sometimes we may not have a lot of genealogical details about a given family in our research. But so often we can still learn alot about the world the lived in - by gathering details about the location where they lived and the time period they lived in.
Here are some ideas:
LOCAL HISTORIES
Look for county and city histories that may tell the history of where your ancestors lived.
FamilySearch Catalog can be a great source for this. Or Google Books
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog
or Google Books
(modify the query for a specific location)
you can also search on family surname histories

Old Newspaper Articles
Here is an example of articles about members of the Yancey Family

(you can change the query to meet your own research needs)

Popular Post Cards
See what historical Post Cards are available for the city or county your ancestors lived in.
Google can be a great way of looking for such postcards

Is there a way to search the catalog for a specific name or phrase by using “” .... it seems to work for everything else on the planet but I can’t seem to get it to work for the catalog search?

as far as I can tell - at least on the catalog search - the use of quotes to force a "phrase search" does not work (and I don't think it was ever designed to work that way)
if you do type in multiple words - it does appear to at least look for all of them to be in the result - but it doesn't look for them in any specific phrase order.
Unfortunately across FamilySearch - different search pages work differently- it would be nice if there was more consistency across the board - and that things that are very common in search engines like Google would work the same here.
