depends what you mean by "connect"
Keep in mind - this is one collaborative database - not just a multitude of disjoint family trees. Rather it is one family tree database - normally any one deceased person would only have one record in this database.
So you can use the FIND option to find any of more than a billion deceased people
and see there family tree - and do so searching just one database (FamilySearch Family Tree - which is the same database you use to see your default ancestral line)
here is the FIND page:

Hello @MavaMcdonald1 MavaMcdonald1
You can't connect to a living person. But you can pick up a deceased ancestor that is common to you both, and connect to that person. That should then connect to all of your common deceased ancestors.
I found this in the Help Center.
A great Research source is Help Feature on FamilySearch.org. Sign into FamilySearch.org and your Family Tree.
On the upper right near to your name is a ? Question Mark. Click on that and when the confusing down box appears, click on "Help Center" at the bottom. When it goes to the next page, put your question in the Search Box. It takes a bit of time, using different search criteria to get the result you want. But likely it is there, just a bit hard to find.
Enjoy,
Anitra
