    @Randolph Berno

    In researching my French Canadian Ancestors who left Quebec in 1840s for Ontario, their names were HORRRIBLY mis spelt,. Was Nobler Berno french Canadian by any chance?

    Nobler looks alot like Norbert to me. "o" could be eau, so Berneau. Just guessing.

    Do you have a link to a particular record or can you give the date and location of an event of the subject?

    As far as him being French Canadian ... I did not find anyone who was name Berno or Berneau in the Drouin Collection of Quebec Vital Records (from the parish registers) on Ancestry, although there were a number of Bruneau's.

    I also checked in the P.R.D.H. database of Quebec Vital Records at the Universite de Montreal ... it said that the name Berno is not found in any of their records, on any date. I tried Berneau, and the response was "no data." So it seems that he was not likely to have been born in Quebec.

    Yes, he only spoke French when he immigrated to Vt. and I assume the spelling of his name was phonetic.

    Thanks for the interest.
