What, if any, is the difference between attaching a source and adding a source?
I have the impression that attaching a source pertains to the individual who is the primary subject of the source, and that adding a source should pertain to others named in the source. Is that correct? Thank you!

Same.

There is ALSO ...
.
There is "Attaching" a "Source", to an individual(s)/person(s) [ie. one of more people]; or, a "Couple" Relationship.
.
[ eg. The "Source" may be a PRIMARY "Source" for more than one individual/person. ]
.
And ...
.
There is "Adding" a "Source" to one's "Source Box".
.
[ eg. "Adding" a "Source" to one's "Source Box" enables one to attach the "Source" to Other individuals/persons; or, a "Couple" Relationship, later 'down the track'. ]
.
Just my thoughts.

Thank you very much, Brett! I'm dealing with a death record hitherto unassociated with any profile. There is an opportunity to "attach" it to someone. Should it be attached only to that dead person, or to all those named in the record (parents, in this case)? The wording at the record itself is "attach", but when on a profile's sources list, the option is to "add a source", not to "attach" one. Isn't "attaching" a matter of identification, whereas "adding" is a matter of filling in more details? If that's not so, and if there's no difference, why is "attach" used in one setting and "add" in another? Thanks again! I can't find any guidance on this by searching Help, and I really appreciate the assistance.

Just my thoughts here ...
.
It sounds like the "Source" may be an "Obituary" ...
.
IF, that is the case; THEN, principally, I would suggest the "Source" related to the "Deceased"; and, ALL the OTHERS mentioned in the "Source" are of a collateral consequence; but, still worth noting.
.
As such, 'Yes', of course, in the first instance, the "Source" SHOULD be "Attached" to the "Deceased", that is a 'given' ...
.
AND, where possible, the "Source" should also be "Attached" to the OTHERS mentioned in the "Source", whether or not they are "Living" or "Deceased" themselves.
.
EACH of the individuals/persons that appear in (ie. mentioned in) a "Source" WILL have their own distinct and separate URL (website address) for that particular "Source".
.
As I stated, the "Source" is principally, related to the "Deceased"; but, the "Source" is also a supplementary "Source" for ALL the OTHERS mentioned in the "Source" - but, certainly NOT a 'primary' "Source" for them.
.
In short: 'Yes', "Attach" the "Source" to ALL concerned - ie. the "Deceased"; and, where you can, to ALL the OTHERS mentioned in the "Source".
.
I hope this helps.
.
I hope this makes sense.
.
If not, let me know.

Thank you very much, Jon. Do I correctly understand you to be saying that attaching and adding are the same?

Thank you very much, Brett. So, it seems there is no difference between "attach" and "add", despite the system's use of different words in different settings. I appreciate you taking the time to clarify this!

Again, just my thoughts ...
.
You might say that is just a matter of 'semantics' ...
.
And, of course, it depends on where, you saw the words; and, in what 'context' - in 'FamilySearch'.
.
Lets not get too 'technical' ...
.
Basically, one can, either, "Attached"; or, if one prefers, "Add", a "Source" to to an individual(s)/person(s) [ie. one of more people]; or, a "Couple" Relationship.
.
Whereas, on the other hand, one "Adds" a "Source" to one's "Source Box", which enables one to attach the "Source" to Other individuals/persons; or, a "Couple" Relationship, later 'down the track'.
.
Do not get too 'hung up' on the use of a 'word' in "FamilySearch'; unfortunately, there is not always a lot of 'consistency' in the use of a 'word' (or, terminology) in such - as it also depends on the 'context'.

Brett is basically right about this, but another way to look at it is that when you "attach" a source, that source has to already exist. e.g. the source linker "attaches" pre-existing sources that you have already identified in the database to person record source lists.
"adding" a source is the process of first creating a new source, and then either placing it into a source box, or attaching it to a source list.
So for the source box, "adding" = creating a new source and storing it in the source box (this is sort of like "attaching" it to the source box. See note below)
For a source list, "adding" = creating a new source and then "attaching" it to the source list.
When you "attach" a source (such as a hint) to a person's source list, you are basically creating and storing a citation in that person's source list that points to the actual, pre-existing digital source.
If you do not have a pre-existing source, you can "add" one:
- Create the new source and edit it to contain the information and references (such as citations) that you want.
- If you are doing an "add" to a source list, when you finish editing the new custom source, it will be attached to the source list where you initiated the "add" operation.
- If you are doing an "add" to your source box, when you finish editing the new custom source, it will be placed in your source box where you initiated the "add" operation.
Note that regardless of whether you put your newly added source in a person's source list, or your own source box, they are basically stored in the same format. In other words, sources that you have added to the system and placed in your source box are essentially "attached" to it. However, the system does not use that terminology because "attached" has been specifically limited to sources that are attached to actual person or relationship records. This is the criteria that the hints engine uses to determine if a source is in use or not.
I.e., a source "attached" to your source box would not be considered to strictly be in use--so the terminology of the source box "containing" source citations and source definitions is more appropriate.
The way the 2 different terms are used on the website is subtle, but quite appropriate--at least it was the last time I looked. This is a little unusual (and nice) because subtle differences in terminology like this frequently DO get used inconsistently in FamilySearch.

Yes. (To keep it simple for you...)

As I just said in another thread about this topic, these distinctions are very interesting and no doubt correct, however, I have successfully used "add a source" on a profile to associate records already within the FS database. I guess that only underscores what you and Brett have said about inconsistent terminology.
Thank you so very much for your time, your attention, and your help!
I do hope FS will add a beginner's orientation to working with sources in their "Getting Started" section.

totally agree with Jeff
this is how I understand it also
adding a source -really is ADDING (creating a source) but you usuall continue with the process and attach it to a person.
"attaching" implies that the source already exists

Thank you, Dennis. That makes sense, but please know that the "Add a source" function in a profile also allows one to associate an existing source from the FS database, compounding the confusion. I appreciate you taking the time to respond!
