Can I access orphanage lists from New York for 1861 and if so how? Thank you Beth
Thank you
Beth
Looking for 4 half siblings that disappeared after their second parent died in 1861. Children were Bridget Canavan b. 1848, Lewis or Louis b. 1850, Margery b. 1853, and Amelia or Emma b. 1855. They lived in Brooklyn when their dad, David Canavan died on 1 Mar 1861. There was a step mother Ellen Canavan. She was 19 married 9 months and pregnant and did not keep them. I have never seen any possible family. Both parents were from Ireland and only moved to N.Y. from Montreal Canda in 1851. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Beth Canavan

@beth glaser i just did a quick newspaper search and found the obit for the father David Canavan... it reads:
“Canavan March 1st, David Canavan, aged 33 years, a native of Cork, Ireland. His friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend his funeral at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon. His remains will be interred at Flatbush.”
CLIPPED FROM
Brooklyn, New York

This provides a few clues as to where you may be able to find more records and or info about other family members ... hope it helps😊

Do you know the names of the parents? Sometimes the info about the children is printed in old newspapers when the parents pass away. Have you tried researching chronicaling America and fultonhistory.org?

Anne, the suggestion for checking the Orphan Trains is a good suggestion. It is amazing to think that between 1854 and 1929, 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, abused, or homeless children were shipped by train. Many children were sent to the Midwest, but children were "placed out" to 45 states, plus Canada and Mexico.
If the missing siblings rode the Orphan Train, you might want to check these resources:
