Dear All,

I am not familiar with the German records, and wanted to know if there's something to be found about the death of Isabella Theresia Cossiau, daughter of MD Judocus Cossiau and Jacoba de Burghgrave, born in Roeselare, Belgium December 1677?

She would have died 11 December 1750 (but that might not at all be accurate) in Mainz. The spelling of her family name can vary widely: Cossiau, Cousseau, Cosseau, Cossauw (and that's in native Belgium, let alone what it can become in German).

I do not even know if she died a Catholic (baptized that way) or Protestant.

@PeterDe Burghgraeve  I have sent your question to @Germany Genealogy Research group and the @Belgium, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands group. They should be able to help you.

    Hi Peter,

if she was baptised a Catholic, as she most certainly was in Belgium, and died in Mainz, which is heavily Catholic, being the seat of a Catholic bishopric, she most certainly died a Catholic. Anything can happen, of course, but in terms of likelihood, she died Catholic.

    Have you see this page:

    https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=36671&query=%2Bplace%3A%22Germany%2C%20Hessen%2C%20Mainz%22&subjectsOpen=454781-50

It lists a number of churches for which FamilySearch has records, many of which cover the time period of her death. have a look at that and browse through the various parish records (assuming you have access). If you find her, problem solved. If not, write to the forum again and we'll see what the next step should be. I do advise, however, that you write down each parish in which you look and the exact years that you search. That will be helpful when we try to help you further.

FS has Catholic records for the diocese of Mainz, but you need to be at a FHC or Affiliate Library.

Thanks for the advice. Will do.

Oh, she might very well be a (half) sister of the painter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Joost_van_Cossiau

A friend of mine goes to the Family History Library in Salt Lake (which is currently closed) and sits outside the front door and is able to use the internet to find records that are not currently available at home. I wonder if that would work at your local family history center.

Also you might take a look at Matricula.eu for Mainz.. Don't know your time period. These are Catholic records..https://data.matricula-online.eu/en/suchen/?place=mainz&diocese=&date_range=1500%2C2000

Matricula does not have records from the Catholic diocese of Mainz. One of the two sets of records you found was from the military, the other was from a diocese in Bayern/Bavaria.
