I'm new to genealogy and FamilySearch. I'm attempting United States
1790 Census for a last name. The search engine has been running for over 2 hours. Is this normal? Am I just being impatient?

Nope, this is not normal! Can we clarify a few things? I am presuming that you were at familysearch.org and you searched for the 1790 census?

Were you using the search at this page:

Also, I checked the Exact Match box on the last name.

George, you might want to clear your cache and cookies and restart your machine. I was able to pull up an instant answer using just the surname Free.

Which browser are you using? I don't have good success with I use Microsoft Edge. I typically use Chrome.

    1790 census Free

Try unchecking the box and see if you get a better result.

Let us know if this doesn't fix your issue.

When I research a family name, I try different techniques. I try a search without limiting the information to:

    • exact spelling
    • including first, middle and last names
    • location
    • parents/ children/spouse names

I wait to restrict the information until I see what kind of results I find. YOf course sometimes, we really do want to restrict the information. You might only want to know about the surname Free in a particular state. Or you might want to see if you can find addtional children that belong to John.

Thanks for the tip. I tried a search with the Exact Match unchecked - still failed. I'm currently downloading Chrome and will retry with this browser.
