I'm new to genealogy and FamilySearch. I'm attempting United States 1790 Census for a last name. T
1790 Census for a last name. The search engine has been running for over 2 hours. Is this normal? Am I just being impatient?
Nope, this is not normal! Can we clarify a few things? I am presuming that you were at familysearch.org and you searched for the 1790 census?
Were you using the search at this page:0
Yes, Carolyn to both questions.0
George, pleases share the name and other information that you were searching for. I would like to try to duplicate the problem from here.0
Last name: Free
1790 U.S. Census0
Also, I checked the Exact Match box on the last name.0
George, you might want to clear your cache and cookies and restart your machine. I was able to pull up an instant answer using just the surname Free.
Which browser are you using? I don't have good success with I use Microsoft Edge. I typically use Chrome.0
Try unchecking the box and see if you get a better result.0
I'm using Microsoft Edge. I'll install and try the Chrome browser. Thank you for your assistance Carolyn.0
Let us know if this doesn't fix your issue.
When I research a family name, I try different techniques. I try a search without limiting the information to:
- exact spelling
- including first, middle and last names
- parents/ children/spouse names
I wait to restrict the information until I see what kind of results I find. YOf course sometimes, we really do want to restrict the information. You might only want to know about the surname Free in a particular state. Or you might want to see if you can find addtional children that belong to John.0
Thanks for the tip. I tried a search with the Exact Match unchecked - still failed. I'm currently downloading Chrome and will retry with this browser.0
Chrome works! Again, I thank you for your assistance.0
Hurray! I am happy that we resolved this problem for you. I wish you success in searching for your family.
