My g grandparents were Fishel and Rose (Pepper) Plotka.. I think Fishel was an egg dealer in Russia. .unable to find exactly where they lived or died in Russia. Any ideas?

@Lois Cohen - Besides the ship manifest you should try to locate naturalization records as these usually detail either where the person was born or where they lived in the Old Country when they left for America. Do you have these families on the 1900 or 1910 census? That census asked for the year of immigration and is usually pretty accurate. That would help you narrow the search.
Go to this site to search for the ship manifest. Steve Morse has the absolute best tool to use for searching. Most likely they came through Ellis Island though they may have gone straight to Boston.

Our ancestor came before 1906. Israel Silverman, my paternal grandfather, was naturalized in Providence , Rhode Island Nov. 2, 1898. His surname was spelled SILBERMAN. It states he was born June 1870 and he was a minor when he arrived April 8, 1887 in New York City. He had been living in Providence, RI for 11 years.
Yes, Israel Silverman is in the 1900 and 1910 Providence census. Per the 1900 census he stated 1890 as his year of immigration.
Maybe, his ship's manifest is missing.

Hi Lois!
I noticed that on the 1900 census, it states that he was a naturalized citizen. Have you looked for naturalization records? These can often be the key to finding the hometown. Records in Russia are kept at the local level, so it's crucial to know the name of the hometown before you can begin looking at records in Russia.
You can read more about locating naturalization records in this article.

Hmm, that's difficult when records don't provide a specific place. If some of his relatives came from Zincov, you may want to try looking there. That might be your best bet.
Looks like there are two possibilities for "Zincov:"

Do you know which one it might be? Both are now located in modern day Ukraine.
