Database entry with 2 place names

Hopefully this is the right place to post this.

This database entry has 2 event places and I am not sure which one to use or how to cite it. Can you tell me what Event Place (original) is vs the other Event Place?

Here is the FamilySearch wiki page. Search Results

    Web results

Crosby on Eden, Cumberland Genealogy - FamilySearch

    www.familysearch.org › wiki › Crosby_on_Eden,_Cumberland_Gene..

and always try to Google it as well. [Two villages, High Crosby and Low Crosby], so it is called Crosby on Eden.

    @Desiree Hendrickson

    .

    Taking a different 'tack' ...

    .

IF I was entering that "Place" against an individual/person in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch"; THEN, I would simply use a "Crosby-upon-Eden, Cumberland, England" as my preference.

    .

A Vision of Britain through Time

    Place: Crosby upon Eden, Cumberland

    https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/1552

    .

Whereas, the "Crosby-on-Eden, Cumberland, England" would also be acceptable.

    .

But, I would certainly dispense with the "United Kingdom" suffix.

    .

Although 'technically' correct, I would suggest that those from that time period referred/considered they were from, England; or, Scotland; or, Wales - and, "British"; but, they would NOT have generally used the "United Kingdom" suffix.

    .

    But ...

    That said ...

    .

    That is just me.

    Each to their own.

I saw that - but the wikipage shows both place names being used. Some of their records contain the name Crosby-upon-Eden in the titles.

And I still don't know why the database shows both - I had wondered if it used to be called Crosby-upon-Eden and perhaps now its called Crosby-on-Eden, but I haven't seen mention of that.

Thank you for the link. If I understand correctly, Crosby-upon-Eden was succeeded by Crosby-on-Eden in 1934, in which case I agree with you, that I should use Crosby-upon-Eden.

Still I wonder why FS posts both names....

If the Places tool is correct, then Crosby upon Eden is only an ODM Variant Name for Crosby on Eden

    .

'Yes', that is WHY the "Place Names" Database SHOULD allow the Place name of "Crosby-upon-Eden, Cumberland, England" as an AVAILABLE "Standard", which it currently DOES NOT - rather than just being an "Alternative (Variant) Name".
