How do you correct your family tree? Our research group has had enough individual DNA tests done to know we are not related to John and Martha (Lockett) Chumbley.

However, there have been many, a great many actually, who have tagged this couple and their very long linage to their trees and I see them in my tree and I need to know how to remove them and all their lineage from my tree here on FamilySearch.com

Thank you

    .

    As an aside ...

    .

    FYI

    .

We do not have our OWN "Tree" in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".

    .

We ONLY have "Branches", that are interconnected, in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us, that is "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".

    .

"Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is NOT like "Ancestry_com" or the like.

    .

We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" like other "Web" Sites; and/or, 'standalone' personal programmes.

    .

We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/person in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".

    .

"Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".

    .

    Now ...

    That said ...

    .

I totally understand the premise of your question ...

    .

But, you have to remember that many, in fact, most, of the Users/Patrons of "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" are NOT "Genealogists", in fact, they are very inexperienced; and, as such, they are often prone to making mistakes (and, usually 'big' ones at that).

    .

No matter how many, provided you are certain that such are "Mistakes"; then, you can "Remove" the INCORRECT lineages.

    .

But, you need to do so with care; as, in some cases, the 'linkages' can be complicated/complex; and, need to be handled with care - assessed as to how to proceed - some can be quite simple; but, others are not.

    .

"Merges"/"Combines" can sometimes be quite complicated/complex.

    .

If you us give some examples of what you are referring to; then, perhaps, we can provide some direction.

    .

Brett, thank you for your reply. I now understand the use of the website much better. It would seems it is more useful as a research tool rather than a proven family tree. I am okay with that, as I am always very careful with information supported by records before I put information in my personal tree.

    Thanks for your time,

    Kathy

    .

"Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is NOT just a "Research Tool".

    .

I DO NOT use ANY (other) "Third Party", 'On-line' Website; or 'Standalone' programme, I ONLY use "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".

    .

But, I do use the "Watch" List in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" and regularly "Check" that "Watch" List for ANY "Changes" to individuals/persons in my Ancestral lines; so that, I can keep on top of them; and, address/fix them, is there is anything untoward - very quick and easy.

    .

    Just my thoughts.

WOW. You sound defensive. I did not intend to insult you or the website. You answered my question and I appreciate your quick reply. Let's leave it at that. Thanks again.

    .

    Certainly NOT 'Defensive".

    And, certainly, no insult taken.

Just my thoughts - that is all.

    'Yes', enough said.

    .

    Brett

    .

ps: And, just continue to use and enjoy "FamilySearch" - that is what it is all about.

Review all the facts and sources, DNA is one source and it shows biological line but there are adopted and step lines to consider as well. Both Lines can be shown in the tree and should be. If there is good sources linking the couple you mentioned in the tree to others then please do not remove them but add additional sources or discussion on them to make the information clear to anyone who may follow. Using the edit button you can remove relationships such as couples or parents from a child or you can relabel them as biolgical or adopted or even guardian. You have all the information in front of you so consult all you have an consider the best way to proceed. I do know disconnecting people can upset others so only do so with good documents and reason statements.

But if the information is wrong in the tree then it is best to make it correct and adding whatever good information you have to the couple and family.

Thank you Cindy. Now that I understand where the information comes from, I am okay with the information. It would be a monstrous task to correct years of misinformation. I am not the person to take that on. Thank you so much for your reply.
