Two William Hoggs in Nash County

The third and final question I have today is concerning two William Hoggs in Nash county, North Carolina. One is born in 1814(LC8R-BCH) and is my 4th great grandfather. The other is born in 1831(27VL-FL7), and was attached son of the first William Hogg. However, it is doubtful this is true because William Hogg(1) was married in 1840 to Rowena Strickland and I know of no other spouses prior to this.

The four censuses with William Hogg(1) in it from 1850 to 1880 are indexed with absurd birth ranges from 1794 to 1834. I think that the indexers simply misinterpreted bad handwriting from the census taker on a couple of censuses. However, it’s something that’s thrown me off because of the William Hogg born in 1834. The primary thing that kept me on the same page with them so far is their occupations and relationships.

William Hogg(2) has two sources backing him up. One is an 1860 census where he is a bootmaker in the household of William Frazier. The only other source I have for him is a marriage in 1865 to Harriet Winters. Again, I’m not sure if he’s the son of the first William or not, but I highly doubt it.

Am I missing something here? William Hogg(2) completely disappears after this. Could they be the same person, relatives, or are they totally unrelated. I’ll give you the names and ID’s once again at the bottom.

William Hogg(1): LC8R-BCH

William Hogg(2): 27VL-FL7

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Benjamin Jones

@Benjamin J. I would look for death records for all of the Hogg family members. Death certificates, probate records, and obituaries may reveal their relationships.

You are right to question the assumed relationship without more proof. Especially since it looks like there's a gap of ten years between William Hogg (2) and the next child born in the family.

Which child of William Hogg (1) is your ancestor?

Temperance Jane Hogg(1850-1891) is my direct ancestor. Her ID is LHKN-N6S. She is my 3rd great grandmother and married Gilliam Augustus Lewis around 1870. The marriage was added without an exact date though, and I haven’t been able to find a marriage certificate in the index so far for them. I know they were living together by 23 August 1870, the date the 1870 census was taken in their area, but since pre-1880 censuses don’t list relationships, I can only assume they are married at that point. In 1880, it does state they are married with kids. Their granddaughter wrote a family history in which she remembered Gilliam, but Temperance Jane Hogg(her grandmother) died eight years before she was born.

@AS B Thanks for the suggestions! I can tell you what I know about all the Hogg children. This family branch isn’t as well researched as some of my others on my seven generation tree, but I have gathered quite a bit.

The oldest children are Josiah and Samuel[assuming William(2) isn’t also a child of William(1)]. Both fought in the Civil War. I have proof of this from Fold3 military record links indexed onto FamilySearch. Josiah’s draft registration information lists his name as Joseph, not Josiah. I’ve seen both names used interchangeably, but I’m not sure if that was a common practice in those days.

Samuel died in the Civil War in Appomattox, and Josiah seems to have survived the war. It lists his name on the Civil War Index, but it says nothing other than his enlistment date. However, Josiah doesn’t appear in the 1870 census, which makes me wonder if he went missing. No one has been able to find him after the war to my knowledge.

Sarah Adaline Hogg is the oldest daughter and has a definitive birth date, death date, and marriage and children. There isn’t a whole lot on her descendents, but there’s a good amount on her.

Kidda Catherine Hogg is next, and she is on censuses, but I have found nothing else beyond that. Maybe Kidda was a nickname for Catherine. She is on the 1850 and 1860 census.

The rest of the children are daughters and have definitive information. They are Temperance Jane Hogg, Arrena Elizabeth Hogg, Cassandra Frances Hogg, Narcissa C Hogg, and Joanna Bryant Hogg.
