I found an interesting notice when reviewing some slave records. Someone had posted a newspaper announcement trying to get former slave owners to band together to seek compensation for the loss of their slaves. (Horrifying!) I did a little bit of follow up research trying to find out if there were slave names listed in information sent to The Slave Owners Registration Bureau. I was hoping to find lists of those that had been enslaved and the names of their owners. Instead, I discovered that this bureau was a scam. The person that posted this was collecting the money that was paid in fees to register the information.

Wow that is interesting and horrible. I’m glad it was proven to be fraud. Thank you

I don't support fraud (or slavery). Often events in history (and the present) make me shudder! Was it wicked of me to wish that the article was written by slaves that wanted to pocket a little of the masters money?
Really I was hoping that I was going to find a source of names that would help the descendants of the enslaved find family members. I love helping with connecting families.

I know how you feel @Carolyn Webber i read some things sometimes and it makes me feel physically ill... like for instance I was reading the will of my possible ancestors... he had willed a male and female slave to one of his daughters, but they could be (I don’t remember the exact terms so I’m working on memory here) but he stated they could be “loaned” or “rented out” to help cover the cost of something or another... and also listed was “infant child” of the female which could be sold to the highest bidder if needed... what was wrong with these people?!?!? How was it that people were so cruel to others? How could they not see that these were living breathing human beings??? Same goes for the native Americans ... I feel ashamed after reading some of these things! Just so sad and horrible the things that were done to our fellow man.

I hope that with the exposure of the ugly truths that we will never repeat these things again. My Momma tears appear when I think of the horrible things that were done. I do not understand it.
