The FamilySearch Catalog is where you can find all of FamilySearch's records.
If you see a record with a camera symbol, click on the camera and you can see the digitised microfilm online.
If there's a camera symbol with a key, you need to either visit a FHC, an Affiliate Library or be a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to view the records. Clicking the symbol will bring up a message with more information (But if you're not a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints you will not be told if members can see the records).
If there's a microfilm symbol or no symbol, the records are currently not viewable. This can be caused by the microfilm not being filmed yet, the record custodians not giving permission for their records to be digitised, or some of the records on the film being too recent to be published under privacy laws.
If you say specifically what film/records/place you are looking for, we might be able to help you more.

Everyone is different - but for me the FS SEARCH RECORDS option is much better than the catalog
https://www.familysearch.org/search/
and you can search by specific geographic area or specific collection.

The Search page only searches indexed records.
The majority of records on FS are not indexed, and can only be viewed in the Catalog.

yeh - and finding anything in the unindexed records is like looking for a needle in a haystack
id rather spend my valuable time on records I can instantly find a name on
and most of the records I am interested in are indeed indexed.

but yes . . . the catalog is the way to go if the specific records are not indexed. . . that is true.

I'm pleased that for you most of the records you need are indexed. But for some places most or all records are unindexed, so it is necessary to manually browse through microfilm or digital microfilm. I've successfully found hundreds of records in the Catalog for my German, Dutch and Belgian ancestors.

that is true!
it just depends what record are in question.

Hi Dennis, thank you so much for getting back to me. What sort of information would be best? Would the microfilm number work?
Thank you again!

Thank you so much - I really appreciate the information. I am totally new to this and wasn't aware of the ins and outs of it.
This is the microfilm number - I may just not know where to look: 716,412
Thank you again!

that corresponds to this record:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/116939?availability=Family%20History%20Library
This specific set of records are only available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake (which is closed)
or any local Family History Center in your area (which are probably also closed)
are you aware of any Family History Centers in your area?
