What's wrong with the edit feature

I tried to edit the date and location on an index item, including the addition of one new hilite, and all went normally until I clicked SAVE. Then, the SAVE button grayed out with an overlay of the "thinking" symbol (rotating string of dots). The thinking has now persisted a whole day.

The edit feature on indexed records has never worked well, as far as I know. Often, it causes the index to become invisible. I've given up trying to edit an index.
