Background:The collection should be considered a finding aid to help locate the original record. An index-only collection cannot be edited. This one was not created by FamilySearch.
Data files relating to the immigration of Germans to the United States for arrivals 1850-1897. Created by the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, Center for Immigration Research. In August of 2013, the National Archives replaced the ARC – Archival Research Catalog - with the OPA – Online Public Access. ARC identifiers will still work to access the collections in OPA.1 -
I think the ship manifest is this one: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-5KS4-FL?i=546. What it actually says is C Hers, age 50, male, farmer, from Germany, destination U. States. The ship is the Wichelhausen out of Bremen, and the previous image gives a date of March 4/53.
Keep in mind that Hers versus Heers is neither an error nor a different name. In a world where illiteracy was the norm, it was only the sound of a name that mattered — and even that could vary by accent or habit.
