I read a long while ago that we had to enter "United States of America". I've tried 4 different New England projects without seeing that anywhere in the examples.

Instructions can, and do, change from project to project, even if you're indexing the same group like New England. The instructions come from the agreement between FS and the record administrators. If the example say Woonsocket, Rhode Island, that is what is indexed.
