I'm indexing US Kansas 1885 State Censes (MQGR-BNS). In the instructions, it states that I have to use a split screen. Using the Reference Image +1 to find the place of birth, but +1 has more names and no places of birth. +2 does have places of birth. Should I use +2 for the places of birth for batch 1 of 3. Batch 2 does have places of birth. In the instructions I'm so post to mark this as No Extractable Data. Please Help I'm Confused!!!!!

Hi @todd tunstall. Looks like the system gave you two pages of people, instead of the usual one. You have marked the images correctly (Yes, then No, then Yes).

The first people are on the right of image 1; their birthplaces are on the left of image 2. Image 3 has the next people on the left page and their birthplaces on the right page.

On image 1, the first person was born in Pennsylvania. The second person was also born in Pennsylvania (the " marks means it is the same as the above entry). The third person was born in Wisconsin.

On image 3, the first person was born in New York. The second person was born in New York. The third person was born in Illinois.

So, you were marking the names right, just need to change the birthplaces. I hope that helps.

You don't need the reference images in this batch of three images.

There are basically two possibilities with these census records: either all of the columns are on one two-page spread, so the names are on the same image as the birthplaces, or the columns are on the front and back of one page, so the names are on one image and the birthplaces are on the next image. In your batch, images 1 and 2 are of this second type, while image 3 is of the first type.

For images 1 and 2, you will follow the examples "How to Index a Population Schedule - Image 1 of 2" and "How to Index a Population Schedule - Image 2 of 2". For image 3, the example is "How to Index a Population Schedule".
