French census records
There is a surname and veuve name given in the surname column. I realize the veuve name is the woman's married name. How should these names be indexed? Should the veuve(married) be used as the surname, should both names be put in the surname with the veuve name second or the "maiden" name be added to the given name? I indexed these a long time ago and it seems that there were some instructions then as to how to properly index.

@pattilynnwithers1 could you please send the batch code found in brackets to the right of the project title Thanks

[MQM7-WT4] lines #115 130. Veuve means widow so that suggests her married name. The one on line 130 might just be a second person.
Also in one of my previous batches there was the term "dit" which means called. If you have any thought on where to place that name that would be great information as well.

dit or dite is often found in Canadian names and often describes the place of origin of the family/name. Over time, the family generally shifts from using the first name to using the dit name. For example, Odon became Odon dit Rochefort, and then Rochefort. When the family moved to English-speaking Canada and later the USA, the name became Rushford.

In respect of the treatment of names in Family Tree, in respect of French dit names this Help article says "Put nicknames and other variations in the Other Information section"
So it seems you treat the dit name as a name variation. No doubt someone who does indexing can advise further.

@MaureenE123 This is an Indexing rather than a Family Tree question.

@Áine Ní Donnghaile I realised that , that is why I said

I have a feeling that I have seen for name variations you type
Name 1 or Name 2 ( ie or between the names)
but I thought someone who is an indexer could advise further.

As an indexer, after reading the instructions for clarification, I would use the maiden name and type "Or" and the other name.
