See this article: How do I view my relationship to a person in Family Tree? https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/what-is-view-my-relationship-in-family-tree

You must not be related to your husband within 15 generations.

The relationship should show as my relationship to my wife's relatives shows in when I check:

Most likely there are some breaks in living relationships. You can find the problem by picking a fairly close relative such as one of your wife's grandparents or great-grandparents. If you don't show a relationship to one or more of them, go to yourself in Family Tree, then trace that line from you to your wife, to her parent, to her grandparent, to her great-grandparent and see where the break is. Then repair the relationships and things should work fine. If you still can't get this to work, reply here with what you found.

I tested this back to my wife's 7th great-grandfather and the relationship through her shows correctly.

You asked about "a relationship to my husband and his family." Note that there are two different answers:

    • The relationship to your husband is a special case. A relationship to him will be shown only if you are related to him within 15 generations as some sort of cousin.
    • The relationship to your husband's family will be shown using the normal rules: FamilySearch will show the closest relationship through a common ancestor; a couple relationship may be used at the beginning or end of that relationship. For example, the wife of your husband's first cousin once removed would be a possible relationship. Relationships to your husband's family will likely go through him as the first step, but it's possible that for some cousins FamilySearch could find a relationship through your family that is closer. For this to work, it is important that the profile you see for your husband in your FamilySearch tree is connected to his deceased parents (or grandparents — as far back as you need to go to connect to deceased ancestors in Family Tree).
