How to track person from one state to another - land grants?

I am trying to see if the William Martin and Margaret Dickey married in 1801 in Rockbridge, VA, are the same family found in Shelby County, KY, in 1810 census with 8 family members, 1820 census with 13 members, 1830 census with 8 members (all in Shelby). Is this a reasonable migration path from Cumberland Co, NC, for Margaret Dickey to Rockbridge, VA, then William and Margaret Martin to Shelby County, KY? I think Margaret was born about 1783 in Cumberland Co, NC, and William possibly a few years older born in VA.

Probate and deeds would be a good start. You might try using Full-Text Search. https://www.familysearch.org/search/full-text
