Hi everyone,

I am doing some work on my family tree and some of the records I need are not accessible online, I went to the closest center which is about an hour's driver from where I live but had the same problem over there. I was told that I should be able to consult these records in the main library in Salt Lake City which is a problem for me as I live in Europe.

I wonder if anyone from the community has access to these records and can help me, here are two examples :

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:658Q-7YLS

Thanks in advance.

    You are welcome, John.

is it expected that some images are accessible in an AL while they are NOT accessible in an FSC

It's the other way around. An FSC has access to many record sets that cannot be viewed at an AL. For example, NYC vital records can be viewed at an FSC but not at an AL. It's a matter of the contract between FS and the record holder.

I don't know where you are, and I don't need to know. But, the issue may be where the FSC you visited is located. Certain geographic locations are not permitted to access certain record sets.

@John88362 According to the notes on those two records, they should be available at any FamilySearch Center (FSC) or Affiliate Library (AL).

I went to my local AL yesterday; I will go again one day next week. I'll be happy to look then.

    Thanks @Áine Ní Donnghaile

That's what I see on the website as well but in reality they were not accessible at the closest center, I don't know if AL have different permissions but there is no AL near my place to verify, and when I called support the person I spoke to mentioned she sees them as accessible in Salt Lake City only. Anyway yes I would very much appreciate if you can verify next time you go to your AL we never know, again thanks.

@John88362 Were you using your own computer when you visited the FSC or one of the Center's machines? Sometimes, it is as simple as a need to log out of FamilySearch and log in again to access the restricted records. See this thread from yesterday where I helped another user: https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/168773/someone-can-help-me

I'll be happy to verify your 2 records in a few days.

    @John88362

I've been to my Affiliate Library today, and I have your images. I've sent them to you by private messages. Look for a red number on the envelope at the top right.

@Áine Ní Donnghaile this is extremely helpful I cannot thank you enough, I was able to open the images in your private message and replied to it.

So in order to help other folks reading this post in the future it would be useful to clarify, is it expected that some images are accessible in an AL while they are NOT accessible in an FSC? Or does this mean that the FSC I visited was doing something wrong?

Since normally the Venn diagram for record access has SL > FSC > AL > home (that is, Affiliate Library access is a subset of what can be seen from an FSC), I suspect that your center was doing something wrong.

Not necessarily. Since the records John needed are in Arabic, there may be restrictions about accessing them in certain locations.

The records are in old Turkish (Ottoman), and I am located in France.

I will be traveling to bigger city in France soon and will try to access the same records in a different FSC, will see how that goes…

Sorry John for mistaking the language. Not one of the ones I speak. If the Ottoman records are blocked in one location in France, they will be blocked in all locations in France.
