Memory in source not in Memories

I added a source to which I attached a memory. I expected the uploaded memory to appear in Memories. It did not. Does this mean that I should always upload a memory to Memories first and then add it to the source from Memories.

If you upload an image as you create a Memory source, that image will be used for the source but will not be added to Memories. There could be situations where you want to use some sort of image for a source, but have no desire to have that image appear in the Memories for the person.

If you want an image to appear in Memories for the person AND to be used as the image for a source, then yes, you should upload the image to Memories for that person first, and then when you create the source, use the attached Memory as the image for the source. As a slight variation, you can upload the Memory to your Gallery without attaching it to the person, and then create a source from it (there is no requirement that a Memory used for a source for a person be attached to that person).

The terminology used in the user interface is a bit unfortunate in this case. When you add a source, you have the option to Add New Memory Source, and when you do that, you can "Upload Memory". But you're not really uploading a Memory, but rather uploading an image or a PDF. These are files that could become a Memory, but they are not actually a Memory (a term that has specific meaning within FamilySearch), but they will not be a Memory if all you do is upload them as a source.

That is exactly what I was expecting/thinking it would happen.

So I was surprised by Alan Browns comments - that it was not uploaded to Memories".

though, indeed, it will not show under the memories of any (source-tagged) id - until it is actually person tagged.
since source tagging itself does not person tag.

But it most definitely is a memory item in ones gallery.

This is one reason I prefer Person Tagging over source tagging

though of course they can BOTH be done.

Person Tagging is much more "in your face"

Source tagging is under the covers.

You said: 'use the attached Memory as the image for the source'.

I would, but cannot do it. there is no direct way for me.

So if I understand you correctly - any item uploaded via the SOURCE option will NOT show in your gallery of memories (by default) ? I thought anything uploaded no matter via whatever means - was added to the gallery. This appears to be one exception.

When I tested uploading a memory directly to a source from the person page, the memory appears in both the source (linked to the ID) and my memories gallery. The "memory" is not automatically tagged to the ID.

So in my experience the uploaded file does become a "memory"
