I'm doing directories from 1882-1929 and there is Wm is this an abbreviation of William or something?

Wm is shorthand for William, but do not spell out William.

From the Given Name Field Help (purple question mark above the field):

Type the given names as they were written. Do not correct misspellings or expand abbreviations.

Other names you will come across in the directories:

    Geo. - George

    Saml. - Samuel

    Thos. - Thomas

    Danl - Daniel

    Jas. - James

And good old Chas (Charles). That's the only one that, in addition to being a printed shorthand, actually gets called "Chaz" or something similar as verbal shorthand that I've heard (that I remember).

Saving room on paper was a very serious, financially-driven endeavor back then.
