I've been having trouble creating new standardized places for a few days - all attempts end after submitting, system reporting that it can't find a my parent place. But I definitely enter the data correctly, the parent names I mentioned exist in the system! About a week ago, everything was working OK. What does it mean?

Server break down? Internet connection problems? Update to the program that has broken your browser?

When I tested this just now, the parent place came up just fine so I'm not sure what could be going on when you try.

Here is PrintScreen - situation after Submit: !Parent name cannot be find

I have edited: Municipality - Vrapice (name) - Kladno, Čechy, Rakousko (existing parent name) - Czech language - Location (OK) - URL of Wikipedia.

It is something wrong? I have more unsuccessful attempts with another places yesterday and tomorrow.

I changed the website to Česky and followed your steps exactly and got the same error which confirms that something really is not working on their end. I hope someone in the Places team sees this and can get the problem off to the engineers to fix promptly.

As a test, I changed back to English and so used the parent place of Kladno, Bohemia, Austria, but otherwise filled out the form just like you did. I got the same error which insists Kladno, Bohemia, Austria ( https://www.familysearch.org/research/places/?text=10705510&focusedId=10705510 ) does not exist in the database. So it isn't a language problem.

    To Gordon Collett:

Thank you for your testing, I hope that someone in the Places team sees this too.

    Has this been escalated, please?

The issue may have been Vrapice was a place type Populated Place. I changed this to Village. I created a new historic period of unknown to 1918. See:

    https://www.familysearch.org/research/places/?text=12730906

The parent place used was 10705510.

Please see if this meets your needs. If it is indeed a language issue, please let us know, and we will research it further.

Now Vrapice historical period of uknown to 1918 is OK, thank you.

If the problem is in the term Populated place, then of course the problem will be more general - the vast majority of Czech villages and towns have this type of place, so then it is not possible to create a new place with a different historical period? At the same time, I myself cannot suggest a change of place type in Suggest a New Place mode.

I would also very much like to solve another specific problem in an area that greatly affects my part of the family tree. Parent name Holešov, Kroměříž, Czechia (7263470) is superior to 70 villages (from Aujezd to Žop) with historical period of unknown to 1918. This is an obvious mistake. Parent name Holešov, Moravia, Austria (12074757) should be used correctly for these villages. My attempts to change the Parent Name for some of these villages were unsuccessful, both in Suggest a New Place mode and in Improve This Place mode.

@russellwaltgeorge1 Something more than just the place type is a problem. I just tried suggesting a new place and was very careful to pick a parent place that did not have place type of Populated Place and I still got the error message "The Parent Place was not found." Something in the routine is broken.

I also have the same problem in the Netherlands with Error "The parents place was not found". The parents place does exist and can be selected on the previous screen.

This was due to a bug in our system. It should have been resolved over the weekend of November 2/3 of 2024.

Please try again, and if you are still having issues let us know.

Thank you for your interest in improving FamilySearch Places.

    Best Regards,

    Authorities Team

The matter is far from resolved. Consider this: There are a few churches in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, but the Parish Church, St Peter's, does not exist as a standard place of worship. If you choose Huddersfield, Yorkshire England as the starting point, and then select the Satellite view and zoom in, you will find St Peter's clearly identified on the corner of Byram Street, Kirkgate and Lord Street. It is identifed on the map as St Peter's Parish Church, Huddersfield.

Now, try to create a new place of workship with Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England as the existing place, and enter the name for the new place as St Peter's Parish Church. UH OH! ERROR NOT ALLOWED ! the apostrophe is forbidden !

To proceed, remove the apostrophe, and continue:

You are then presented with a drop down list of possible options:

Christ Church, St Mark's Church, St Andrew's Church and St Thomas' Church.

These are all existing places of worship in Huddersfield, and all but one contain apostrophes.

So why are we prohibited from adding a new one with an apostrophe ?

This issue of suggesting a new place with special characters and/or an apostrophe should now be resolved, inlcuding the "St Peter's Parish Church". This is per our internal Standards team. If any of you are still having this issue, please advise.
