Sex of applicant on naturalization form
When I read the project instructions about listing sex of a person if it can be determined by language on the document. If John Smith is listed as having a wife - Jane - is he listed as male or blank?

He is male. If there is no sex field for the applicant and they do not have a spouse, or the spouse's sex is not indicated, then it will be blank.

But see some of the comments from this older thread: assuming "male" based on "wife" can be seen as contradictory to project instructions.

This sounds like it is a case of sixes - six of one and half a dozen of the other! I was reviewing some batches and indexing some batches - not sure what to do now.

If John's wife is Jane, he is male.
If Jane's husband is John, she is female.
If either are unmarried, and there is no sex question, they are marked BLANK.
If John or Jane are married, and the sex of spouse; it'll look something like My wife husband is…, was not indicated, the applicant's sex is is marked BLANK.0 -
I like your answer!! I thought I was doing it right and filling in the sex on the batches I'm reviewing and doing. I appreciate your answers - always!

I'm lazy to go look at an actual batch: does the purple question mark on the field in question still include the line
Do not assume the sex of a person based on the sex of the spouse.
?
If yes, then assuming "male" based on having a wife directly and exactly contradicts that instruction. Ditto, of course, for assuming "female" based on having a husband.
If that instruction is no longer there, then erutherford's directions make perfect sense, and you can disregard my pedantry. However, if that instruction is still there, we have to ask why they have it, if not to prevent application of exactly the "has wife, therefore male" logic?

Do not assume the sex of a person based on the sex of the spouse.
It is still there. Regardless of the spouse-wife/husband I can not bring myself to mark the sex based on the spouse. It might have something to do with being politically correct. My friend has a husband. However, my friend is male. That is today's world. Those are the instructions we have been given by the "owner of the project".
