Where can I view pre 1700's family tree records please
I have some reputable info on an ancestor in 1170 and his son and wanted to be able to work backwards from them, where could I look for this information please?

@Mysore it is going to be difficult to do what you want, because the records just won't exist (and in many cases most likely never did exist). I have spent the last week chasing down 3 of the 6 children of my 4 greats grandmother (1799-1845), and I only found one (a census record giving me the hint I needed to dig deeper). And that was in early 19th century New England.
Why don't you focus first on the historical information you have, and look for the academic research that might give you more detail of your family member's rôle and background? The Becket episode will no doubt have been studied in depth by many academic historians. Further existing academic research might then help you with your family member's genealogy, though verifiable linking to the present day sounds a big stretch.
So what I'm suggesting is, focus first on him as an interesting historical figure, not as an ancestor.

The recommended process is to start with yourself and work backward, checking and connecting the dots at each step along the way.
Starting from the other direction, a researcher risks spending a lot of time - and probably money - researching a branch not connected to your family.

Maybe I should have said forwards? I would like to trace back from 1170 AD to nowadays. Thank you

In what part of the world did you find 12th century family history records that you consider reliable??

The info was sent to my family in 2014 from a cousin in England. My ancestor was part of the group who rode to Saltwood castle, Kent, England on the night of 28th December 1170 to murder Thomas A Becket. I have been told of other events and related lands and buildings which do fit with the family names and stories passed down, but I don't have the official details/records to confirm any of it and I don't know how/where to get that confirmation, so that is the info that I was hoping to discover. It's a long shot I know.
