I am trying to fix an indexing error on a census record. I have an illegitimate child living with his mother in the household of the mother's father. The grandson is indexed as being a son of his grandson and brother to his mother. When I try to change the child's parent to his mother, I receive an error because the father is unknown and so I do not have a father's name to add to the parents entry box. This returns and error and does not allow me to save the correct information. Is there a way to circumvent this problem?

It sounds like there are two 'parent' boxes. If you delete one, you should be able to just note the mother. Sometimes the system can be glitchy though. Were you able to edit the other erroneous relationships? Those could also be causing an error.

Here is a link which may help:

Otherwise, you could link the census here, and we'll try to figure out why it won't update.
