You could look at the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Malaysia for suggested sources.

As Malaysia wasn't created until 1963, it would be helpful if you could indicate what part of the present day sovereign state was their likely place of birth. Also, whether they were of European, Indian, Chinese or "ethnic Malayan" descent, as this would probably reflect whether or where birth and other records might be located.

I am unfamiliar with such records myself, but - as an example - know that for records relating to Indonesia you would need to know if an individual was born on Java, Sumatra, or one one the other islands and whether they had European parentage (Dutch or German) or a local heritage. Registers for different ethnic groups, where they survive, seem to be divided along those lines.
