Indexing 1876 Marne, France census records I encounter the letters S. O. handwritten.
The letters S. O. are, I believe, representing the words Sans Occupation. Per project instructions, I am not to type in occupations but rather "relationship to the head of household." Anyone with experience with S. O. in census records?

I saw reference to the french abbreviation s.o. or "sans objet" with an english translation of N/A (not applicable).

Perhaps the appropriate entry would be "not a relative" or "lodger"
