For the entry for Drewett, namely the 2nd entry (see below url link )

William Carr & Drewett (Betsy A)

Would the entry be

Surname: Carr, Given Name: William

Spouse Surmame: Drewett Spouse Given Name: Betsy A

since it doesnt look to be of a business listing. And with the Drewett in the 2nd position, one would think the surname of Carr goes to William.

Thanks

I would index Besty's name as Betsy Drewett.

I'm tempted to interpret that entry as given name = William Carr, spouse given name = Betsy A, surname (for both) = Drewett, because otherwise, what's a Mr. Carr doing listed under Drewett — but then what the heck's the ampersand doing there?

Unfortunately, the directory in question is FHC/AL only on FS, and the best I could find elsewhere was from more than a decade and a half earlier (https://archive.org/details/haverhillmassach00pric/page/56/mode/2up), which is formatted somewhat differently and doesn't offer an explanation of the layout anywhere that I could find.

Given the ampersand, perhaps it would be best to enter Betsy as the primary person and Mr. Carr as the spouse? Or separate entries for each?

Julia, yeah that is the first time I have seen that entry too in a city directory (barring the ones usually for business directories of Smith, Smith & Smith ).

So the jury still out on what to do with William Carr it would seem. Ideally would be looking at the actual Carr entries for this same city directory and see if there is a William Carr who has a Betsy A. But alas, we can't do that!

Thanks in advance (will keep looking here over the next few days!)

well I see under Dubois (next page over, last column, near the bottom) that

for Milvena, it is listed as

    now Mrs Lafayette Dinsmore

So listed Milvena with surnames of Dubois or Dinsmore

And i can see on page -3 of that batch there is a Lafayette listed with a Milvena for Dubois.

So that helps on for Milvena Dubois. But makes William Carr kinda odd.

I will leave the Carr/Drewett as is since I have to submit the batch in the next 12 hours or so.
