Suffixes are not indexed in city directories so John Smith Jr is a duplicate of John Smith in terms of the name and the researcher will find the Jr when reading the document

There is no suffix field in the City directories that are available now. You don't index Jr. or any other suffix.

And even though that might be the case, I know the project this question is probably coming from - US City Directories Part G. Since there is no instruction whatsoever on suffix field in this project!
It would be nice to have consistent instructions for similar projects like city directories. Since some instructions have items like this in the What to Index and/or What to Remember about the Project sections.

There doesn't need to be instruction on suffixes if there's no field to index suffixes. If there's no field for it, it doesn't get indexed. I haven't seen a suffix field in any project for a some years now. Some have a prefix field, but that has nothing to do with a suffix. And in name fields we only index names, not extra things like prefixes or suffixes. Anyone looking up the name for research will see in the image that there was a suffix, so it's not an important bit of information to be included in the index, the index's purpose being to simply help find that particular record in Family Search.
