Why was the ability to pull up source records in "Events" with a single click eliminated?
I assume a system update glitch was to blame.
Previously, one was able to look up, say, a residence entry which looked in error or lacking in sufficient detail and pull up the census record for review. Now, one has to scroll up to the top, look under "Sources," review the record and then navigate back to the details page with at least two clicks. The source should more readily be accessible like it was before and still is from the "Vitals" section. Currently, the "Events" section shows "0" sources for everything and the user must resort to unnecessary lengths to verify and/or perfect the entry.

I think you're misremembering. (It's a very common false memory among users of FS, if that makes you feel any better.)
If a conclusion is tagged with its sources, then it works exactly the same way, regardless of whether it's under Vitals or Other.
The difference is in how that tagging is achieved: until a couple of years ago, only Vitals conclusions could be tagged, and the old version of Source Linker was unable to tag any transferred conclusions that it put under Other. The new version creates tags for all transferred events and facts, and the checkboxes default to "on", so new conclusions should not have that "zero sources" problem, except by user choice — but of course, this doesn't change anything about the old ones. If an event was added using the old Linker, or before the most recent revision of the profile details page, and no user has come along to add source tags for those events, then they will still say zero sources.
Also relevant to your post: are you aware of the "Sources" tool? It opens the Sources list in a right-hand panel, which scrolls independently of the details page. This makes it much easier to compare a long list of residences (source-tagged or not) to the originating records.

I went back and manually tagged a census record and did see that the source is more readily available for referencing afterwards. But that does nothing to help with "old" entries. Seems like something could be implemented systemwide to tag all residences based on matching the year field to make things easier for subsequent researchers. BTW, I had no idea that new residences had to be manually tagged for this to be accomplished, or I would have been doing that all along.

Sorry, but that suggestion gives me the shivers. Historically, FamilySearch automatic/systemwide processes don't give great results. See this recent thread, among many others:

There are risks, no doubt. But if the only thing to be done is tag a residency date with a census record of the same year, in my view the risks would be minimal.
