City Directories - Assuming "Dr" Prefix from "MD" in listing?

Goodness. I posted this without my question. I am working on this project and batch:

US—City Directories, 1823–1935 [Part D]

[MQ2D-DK6]

These listings are very brief, just the phone number and name. There are many who are listed as "Smith John MD." Do I assume that would make his prefix "Dr" and add that, or add nothing, since MD is more of a suffix, and "Dr" is not explicitly listed?

Thanks for your help!

Rule of thumb, if the prefix (or any other field) is not there, do not index it. It is not our job to assume that he uses the Dr. prefix. The only time that a field would Presumptively filled in, like the spouse's last name in the directories, is if it stated in the Project Instructions and/or Field Helps.
