Adding missing persons to a census record?

Iredell Thompson [GS3H-3HF] is missing his wife and children in the 1880 census for Surry Co., N.C.,

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-67XS-NYP?view=index&action=view&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMWD3-5Q4

Can I add the missing persons to the record? If so, are there instructions for doing that? (I've done minor editing of records but have never added a person.)

Thanks,

Anne

Just to clarify - I assume you mean the 1870 census (for which you have provided the link).

The problem is well illustrated at

    https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&q.givenName=iredell&q.residenceDate.from=1870&q.residenceDate.to=1880&q.residencePlace=Surry%2C%20North%20Carolina%2C%20United%20States&q.residencePlace.exact=on&q.surname=thompson

No relationships shown on 1870 record, but appear for 1880.

I will let another Community member deal with the editing query as I am only familiar with England & Wales census records, which have no images linked in FamilySearch, so can't be edited at all!

I took a further look at records for other individuals in the 1870 census (just checking NC) and see none of them appear to have relatives linked, so I'm sure you'll be be provided with further advice on how other users deal with this situation.

Not sure how you could 'add' an individual to the indexed record. Alternative is to save the image to your Source Box. Modify 'Notes' to include relevant information from the image. Then attach the Source to the individuals 'missed'. Create a 1870 residence event for each and 'Tag' Source to that event… Will at least ensure record is attached until index of the image is fixed…

The 1870 US Census was the last US Census with no relationships defined. If a person has been skipped in the indexing, it is possible to add a name, but I don't recommend it. The Editor has some serious glitches. If you edit the index, the record may become invisible because the index will disappear.

Thank you very much for your replies. Paul, yes, I did mean the 1870 census. Áine, I appreciate your warning that added persons might disappear. That is certainly a discouragement for fixing the record. Mark, I will create a Source Box record as you suggest.

As of earlier this afternoon, the "+Add" button on the index editor still doesn't work for adding a new principal person and family: you go through all of the convoluted effort, only to have everything you've added disappear at the next refresh of the page.

However, I have succeeded in adding a missing parent to a baptism using that button. The only difference I can see between the successful addition and all of the unsuccessful ones is that I added the new person to an existing indexed event, rather than trying to create a new one. (And, of course, I can't remember enough about the edit to find it now, so I can't report on whether the index editor's gremlin subsequently ate it or not. It hadn't yet done anything through several refreshes at the time, though.)

Julia, thank you for your sharing your mixed results with the "Add" a person button. I will avoid it until I hear more durable results.
