US—City Directories, 1823–1935 [Part D][MQ2H-ZJ4]
There is a name that appears at the end of the entry but not in parenthesis. Is this indexed as a spouse?

It hard to read and needs to be adjusted. First entry Umbach, Jno G Minnie is added at end, Underwood, Geo, Mary is added at the end

The Evansville pages I have seen do have a wife's name after the address. Mine have been a little more clearly scanned, though, so you can see the comma between the name and the address. (Also watch out for streets with womens' names— Harriet comes to mind first as one that came up often.)

Without seeing the image, it would be hard to say. Can you link the image here so others can comment on it?

The righthand page also has some that are more legible. The only thing I can think of is that they just didn't use parentheses. I looked up a few of them in Family Search and the names correspond to their wives. Maybe they did it that way because the wive's names are after the addresses instead of after the man's name, like they usually are.

I can concur that in some city directories, the spouse's name will be either at the end of the address or in parenthesis after the listed name. But it usually will be one way or the other (i.e It will NOT be a mixture of both parenthesis or at end of name/address in directory).
Also be VERY careful if the spouse name is at the end of the address that IT is the Spouse name and NOT a street name. I tried to find another thread (and alas can't) that had some examples.

Thanks so much so all the help. I didn't want to assume the name was a spouse without some clarification, I wasn't sure the directions were clear. Thanks again!
