the instructions say to index all different spellings of the name, but it is obvious that the spelling of the name is definitely the first spelling. Are we to index all the different spellings of that last name?

If it is something like Smith, see Smyth or Smythe, and Albert Smith is the first person under that, only Smith is indexed. The additional spellings alert the person looking at the directory that if the person they're looking for is not under this name, check these other spellings.

That is the way I have always done it. It's just for this particular directory the PI said that there were differences in the way that it is indexed. I couldn't figure out what they are.
