How do I properly add a 1945 obituary from a newspaper

I am assuming you have the clipping and have no idea the name of the paper that originally ran it? What I would do is upload the image to the memories section of all relevant ancestors, then create a source from that memory. When you add a source, you have an option to create a memory source.
