Is there a best place to search for Dolan family records?

My relative, James Dolan was born about 1825 in County Westmeath. I believe he met and married his wife there, Ann Bennett and I believe their first born son Keran. I believe James came to America in 1850 and his wife and baby son in 1851.

I have a good sense of his relatives in the US but not his/our Irish roots

I hit the brick wall. Any and all hints would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Margaret8112 County Westmeath is also an ancestral home for me. My 2nd GGF was born there in 1852.

You are welcome to join us in the Ireland Research Group where we have knowledgeable Irish researchers.

Religion is an important part of Irish research in that time period. Roman Catholic registers (index only) are available here on FamilySearch. The images are available on several sites; some are completely free.

I'll be happy to help if I can.

Oh, I am so happy just to know there is an offer of help!

I did register for the Irish Research Group yesterday and am awaiting their reply.

Have you had any success finding your Westmeath relatives?

I have been researching the old cemetery in Marcellus, NY and found there are 4 "Lot"s of Dolans, each containing several family members but my relative is in a lot by itself with his wife. Researching the other graves I found some families are from Rosecommon. I have not yet been able to connect these folks to my Westmeath family. Is it possible Roscommon people and Westmeath people could be related?

    Hi Margaret,

You've already been accepted in the Ireland Research group. Acceptance is immediate.

Yes, Westmeath and Roscommon families may be related. The two counties are adjoining, and some parishes overlap the border. The same is true for Westmeath and Longford.

Depending on the parish, the records in Westmeath can be very good. My 2nd GGM was from Mullingar, and I've traced her family to the mid-1700s - my 5th great-grandparents were married in 1743.
