Indexing city directories; Instructions say not to index the deceased spouse !! W H Y ?? This info can make a big difference in identifying family members, especially with very common names. Wish I understood ??

Nearly all temple work is done for the deceased,,,, so why do we skip over this info ???

Because the researcher can see the deceased person when they view the record and oftentimes, the woman (it's mainly women) was not in the directory when the spouse was alive; ie John Smith (John was alive), then after John died, Mamie Smith (the widow) was listed in the directory under Mamie Smith.

Another example, this personal one: my city's directory never listed my grandmothers, Dorothy and Freda. It always listed my grandfathers—Russell and Henry. It wasn't until after my grandfathers died did my grandmothers get their own listings in the phone book (even though Dorothy always used Mrs. Russell Edwards, even after he died in 1972).
