When there are several last names or spelling, we use OR to separate each name.

Are you doing the City Directories?
If so, then I assume you are referring to the times where it says [Name 1] see also [Name 2]?
Those aren't saying that the person could have either name—quite the opposite, actually. Those are there to tell the person reading the directory "If you don't find the person you are looking for under this surname, check this similar surname."
Therefore, you would index Name 1 but not Name 2, because they definitely didn't have Name 2.

Thank you! Appreciate your time.

When adding several surnames to a person, you can add all the names once and on the second person you can type the first letter then hit the backspace and then hit enter and then you don't have to enter them every time.

So… how do we note (or are we suppose to note) that they could look under this alternately spelled last name as we index? ([
Name 1] see also [Name 2]

We don't. If "see also" is attached to a name, that is done after batches are indexed and review. The researcher will be able to see the "see also" when they view the directory.

Thanks for the info!

Also do look at the PI for each project since some projects do have their own criteria of using OR to separate given or surname names.
