What do I do if I believe a record is indexed wrong. My Grand uncle was born Walter LT7L-ZKV, but I have an indexed record listing his birth name as John. All of my research and family history leads me to believe this is Walters birth. This is the indexed record : https://www.familysearch.org/ark%3A/61903/1%3A1%3AQKDD-SSSQ?icid=home-tasks&treeref=GRD7-3JR

    Repaired URL: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKDD-SSSQ?icid=home-tasks&treeref=GRD7-3JR

Since that is not the birth record but an index of birth records, you are 2 levels removed from the record. Add to that, we cannot see the image even of the index, much less that of the original record.

In other words - there is no easy way to know if there is an error on the original record, or on the state-created printed index. I've seen many birth records with one given name while the infant baptism has a different given name.

According to the FS Wiki, the index was provided by the South Dakota Department of Health. It is what we have; it is not something that can be edited at the FamilySearch level.

If you want to know more, you'll want to obtain the birth record from the original location.
