Do "husband" or "wife" determine sex?

If the person's spouse is a "wife" can I assume the person of record is a "husband" and therefore a male? The instructions say "housewife" qualifies an individual as a female. So is her spouse then a male? I've been using the spouse's "title" of wife or husband to determine the person of records sex but not sure that's correct.

"Wife" and "husband" are relationship terms that are used in determining the sex of the applicant. The only way that this is not used is if neither term is typed out/crossed out (and the woman has an occupation like "seamstress") and you're life with the entire sentence of "The name of my wife or husband is."

General indexing directions are that we fill in the sex box only when it is clearly stated or written in the document. Individual project instructions ie Naturalizations will state whether or not the term housewife qualifies a person as female. If not, avoid assumptions by marking the sex box <blank> using the toolbar.
