About the New York, State Death Index, 1880-1956 document
Found my Father's Father in the listing. I was wondering if there is an index for the info on the pages. I am asking because the cause of death is listed as a three digit number. I looked at the beginning and the end and found no info to find out what the meaning is for the number.
It must be somewhere, does any one know?
There is also a Cert. No. on the listings, I'm assuming it is a Certificate Number Is there any way or a place to look that up?
Here is the link to the records I'm referring to

That is the CDC list of causes of death by 3 digit number classifications. New York City death certs are kept separately from the rest of New York. NYC records will eventually all be available through the Reclaim the Records efforts and hosted on an archive web site. If not in NYC, check locally and be prepared to purchase it. To order your grandfather's DC, I would contact the county or even town where he died.

If it's New York City and before 1948, then it may already be digitized and online: https://a860-historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov/digital-vital-records.
If it's not the city, then unfortunately, Gail is right: be prepared to pay. And wait. And wait some more.

Your questions as to cause of death can be researched quickly using the appropriate International Classification of Diseases table, based on year of death.
You can find the tables on this web page http://www.wolfbane.com/icd/index.html1
