How can I limit a search within my own tree?

You might try the new cemeteries search: https://www.familysearch.org/en/cemeteries/

Thank you for that link as it will be very useful when I have names to look for. But currently trying to make a list of all those in my tree who have died in a particular area or state. Very time consuming let alone confusing to try and track through every branch laterally as I’m sure to miss someone There should be a way to limit searches to within your own tree.

@DavickMaryEllen1 One significant problem with this proposal is that the term "your own tree" has many, many possible interpretations.
If this is important to you, I would suggest that you use some third-party software such as Ancestral Quest or RootsMagic (or others, depending on your preferences) that can synchronize Family Tree to its database. Then you can determine exactly which portion of Family Tree you are interested in, and use that software to do your geographical analysis.

The recent "infographic" campaign shows that FS has a mechanism for limiting database lookups to a particular user's relatives, but the imperfections of that campaign — such as missing a user's paternal side entirely — show that the mechanism is limited in its usefulness. Third-party software, as Alan said, is a much better bet, and it's a currently-available, user-controlled option, unlike waiting for FS to allocate its limited resources to this request. Granted, it is a very-frequently-repeated request, so perhaps they're working on it? (I have to think that the infographic must be an early result of some such effort.)

Making a search in PAF, as you mentioned doing years ago, is the equivalent of searching in the current 3rd-party software options.
