Field Help: Given Names

Type the given names as they were written. Do not correct misspellings or expand abbreviations.

For some reason, I keep running across expanded names when I review the City Directory Project

ie; George expanded from Geo, Edward expanded from Edw

Please review the Field Help before taking on this project - creates a lot of work for the reviewer

Thank you

I know from doing the tons of Naturalization records what Wm doesn't always equal William and Geo doesn't always equal George. I've done directories from 1898, 1909 and 1916, just to name a few years, and those years were in the height of immigration. Not every Wilhelm changed to William and not every Georgus (legit had that name once; pronounced "George-us") changed to George. It's a lot like place names; they'll add some variant of "USA" to it when that's not what the PI says. I had one yesterday where the spouse was born in Chicago, Illinois. Illinois was spelled out on the document, but the indexer typed "Chicago, Ills., USA." "Ills" can be used as an abbreviation, like when you're addressing a birthday card (so can IL or ILL, but I digress), but that was not on the document in this case; it was literally Illinois.
