Clarification on City Directory indexing

Do you indexed deceased spouses with the widow or widower?

What are specifically put in the prefix field? What are not? Do you not put Miss, Mrs, jr, sr, in any field?

No individuals listed in companies are to be indexed, correct?

Thanks for the clarification on these points.

    Deceased spouses are not indexed. The prefix fields are for prefixes; Miss, Mrs. If there is no prefix, you will not index the prefix. Unless there is a suffix field, suffixes are not indexed (to give you an idea of how often suffixes are indexed, the last project to include a suffix field was ~2018). Nobody in business listings are indexed; they will appear in their own listings elsewhere in the directory.

    Prefixes; W H Y do we even have a field for prefixes ????? Why do we need Mr or Mrs or Miss ?? Seems a waste to me,,, just more blanks to delete.

    The custodian of the records dictate what fields are indexed.

    @DonaldRobinson95 | I agree.

    If they do not recognize the importance of suffixes (Jr., II,, etc.) which are critical in identifying a particular person, then why in the world do they care about Mr., Mrs., Miss., prefixes that have little value to anyone?

    Mrs. indicates the Surname is the person's married/legal name rather than the maiden/birth name. Miss indicates the person was never married, as in my aunt is a spinister or a female child ages 12-18 years. Mr. indicates (during the 19th and early 20th century) a given name which could be either male or female, as in Marion Jones.

    Yes, Mr., Mrs., Miss, Dr., Rev. would be ones you should index. I have not seen anything else but those that would be indexed.
