My mother had several husbands and children. I am the only child of my father. On my tree I messed up and added my half brother's and sister. My half brother is being seen as my father's only child. He is not. I am my father's only daughter, child. I'm very confused and need help correcting, creating and finding information. Can anyone help?
When you go to any detail page for a person and scroll down to the Family Members section, you will see the family structure. Beside each marriage event and each child is a pencil icon. This is where you edit relationships:
Until you get used to how relationships are edited, I would suggest using just the pencils by the children's names. I would also work on just one child at a time to get them all in the right place.
In the above picture, let's play like Ole is your father, Brita is your mother, and Knud is your half brother. So Knud should have a different father.
Click on the pencil next to Knud to open this pop up:
Notice that there are three Remove Or Replace links. The one under Ole would remove him from this Parent-Child Relationship. The one under Brita would remove her. The one under Knud would remove both Ole and Brita as parents.
You want Knud to have a different father but the same mother. So click the Remove or Replace under Ole, who is the wrong father. This brings you to this screen:
The upper half shows you what is going to happen. The link between Ole and Knud will be deleted. This will not change the relationship between Ole and Brita. Click the check box, then choose your button. If you know Knud's father, then click Replace Father. This will give you the chance to put in a new father either by ID or by searching for him by name or adding him to the tree. If you do not know his father, then click Remove Father and Knud will be left under just his mother.
So play around, test this out, and remember that you can alway try again until you have things right.
Note: you cannot do this on any pedigree page. You have to be on a person's detail page.
You'll need to add yourself as a child to your parents. First of all, copy your ID number. Under your parents, at the bottom of the list of their children, you'll see an 'add child' link. Click that. Click on By ID Number. Paste your ID number into the box. Click next. One caveat with this is that the next time you add a child, it'll still be on 'By ID Number' (it remembers that), so if you want to make a new person instead of adding someone by their ID, you'll have to click on 'By Name'.
Next, you'll need to either remove your half-brother from being a child of your parents, or you'll need to mark him as a step-child of one your father. To remove him, click on the pencil icon next to his name. Scroll down, if it lets you. Where it says Child and your half-brother's name, below that, click `Remove or Replace`. If you instead want to mark him as a step-child, what you need to do instead of clicking `Remove or Replace` is click Relationship type, or Add relationship type under your father's name near the top.
