When a widow or widower is listed many times the deceased is also listed. But the instructions say not to list the deceased. Seems like missing out on a valuable piece of information. Why can't this be indexed by putting (Wid) in prefix and listing both names?

Simply put--the researcher will be able to see the deceased spouse when they view the record.

Slightly longer answer: We did, at one time, index the deceased spouse in the spouse's fields, but since the admins wanted something different this time around, so that's what we do. We also did not, and probably will not, index "wid" or "wid of", since it falls under this instruction:

Do not include titles, terms, prefixes, or suffixes with the name.
