I came across a name in the directory that says "deceased." I have not been indexing those names because we're to index only living people. Is that correct?

You will index that person even if it says "deceased." This falls under Index each unique name in What To Remember About This Project. The only time we do not index deceased individuals is if it says something like Jones, Mary (wid John). In that case, we follow If a spouse is listed as deceased by the words "wid" or "widow of," do not index the spouse.

I belive so. I would recommend checking the project instructions to get a concrete answer though.
